RE: Upgrading from Advancemame 0.71 to 0.87

I think pretty much all of your questions are dealt with there, except
maybe the one on X [ignoring your blasphemous reference to "X-Windows"]
you can create a modeline for X, much like advmame, which would allow
you to use it except some applications assume you're running a much
higher resolution and become difficult to use. The more important thing
here is that, on your cabinet, there is really no reason to run X at
all; doing so would probably negate any gains you made from switching
from Windows and just isn't necessary. With Linux console [no X], you'll
get speed advantages similar to running DOS but with modern soundcard
drivers, better memory management, faster disk access, network
connectivity, etc.

Some other emulators may require X to run, but AdvanceMame, AdvanceMess,
and Daphne [with svgalib support compiled into SDL] all run better
without it...what else do you really need?

...I'll also add, I've never really tried Mandrake but I have used Red
Hat, LFS, and Gentoo, and of the three would definitely recommend
Gentoo...it's more manual and will be a bit of reading but if you're new
to Linux and like to learn to swim by jumping into the deep end, it
might be the best choice.
