I have no idea why, but my config did indeed have display_restore set
to no.  Changing that to yes fixed my problem.

Also, FWIW, I've been playing with many distributions lately, and I'm
currently running Novel Linux Desktop 9 (SuSE) -- and "out of the
box", everything with advancemame is working for me with all of my
hardware, which is a first.  I didn't have to rebuild a kernel (but I
will later anyway), didn't have to hunt down drivers, etc.    i was
finally able to get a distro where, with my hardware, FB graphics just
worked, as did everything else (especially sound & ethernet).
