OK I think I succeeded with makepart.  I'm not really sure,  though, because 
I'm still wrangling with hardware.
 
duh.
 
I assumed that the 1GB limitation of makeusb.bat was inherent in  the FAT 
file system, and therefore makepart.bat would have the same  limitation.  I think 
I'm wrong about this, because I think I've  successfully accomplished my goal 
using makepart.bat, just by assigning a drive  letter to the USB drive before 
running it (something that makeusb doesn't  require).
 
So, anyway, I'm a big dumb @$$.
