Joysticks in Mac OS X (AdvanceMAME)

I compiled and installed AdvanceMAME (and AdvanceMENU) and can play with the keyboard, but my USB Belkin Nostromo n45 does not seem to work at all, not even the buttons. I have looked at the documentation and web site and can't find any information on this except that it says that the SDL driver should support joysticks on Mac OS X. When in the controls setup there is no response to movement/button presses from the joystick, and if I choose the "Calibrate Joystick" menu item, nothing happens. I did find in env.txt that there is an environment variable for specifying the device that is your joystick (if I'm understanding it correctly - I can't say that I really understand the handling of devices in Unix.) I looked in the /dev directory, but I don't see any of the mentioned default devices, "/dev/js*, /dev/input/event*, /dev/input/js*" and nothing with a name that even seems to remotely imply a joystick. The joystick does work in MacMAME (although the analog sticks currently have some issues, which is part of why I was looking at trying AdvanceMAME.) Does anyone have a joystick working in OS X with AdvanceMAME 0.90.0 in any capacity? Is there some setup I need to do to get this working?
