Partly solved, but now same problem as MacMAME (Was: Joysticks in Mac OS X)

A follow up to myself! I discovered and tried running the advj program, and found that the joystick worked there! I could move either the left or right stick and see the numbers changing in a seemingly sensible way, at least after first moving the stick all the way up, down left and right to calibrate it. Also all the buttons work, except for the hatswitch, which does not register at all. So one question is how I get the hatswitch to work? I suspect it has to do with the input_map stuff, and the need to set it up manually, but I'm trying to understand that stuff and, I'm afraid to say, I've yet to get a grasp on it. :( Any help with this would be greatly appreciated! In any case, seeing that the stick worked (mostly) in advj, I found the problem with it not working at all in advmame: the "device_joystick" option was set to "none" in the advmame.rc file, apparently by default. I changed that to "auto" and then I got everything to work except for the hatswitch as noted, at least for digital control games. However with analog control games I find that I've run into the exact same problem I have encountered with MacMAME: Basically, in all analog control games I've tried I have problems with the analog sticks (but not when I'm playing a digital control game and using the analog sticks as digital controls - that works fine!) A specific case is driving type games. In those I have problems when I try to go left (move the stick left), but not right. For example in the game Demolition Derby I can only turn right , or more or less that's the case. In fact, while moving the stick left never makes the car go left, if I move it just a little left, sometimes it actually turns the car slightly to the right! Going into Demolition Derby's diagnostics mode I can see the following phenomena: if I move the stick to the right, I slowly see the numbers go from 0 to 62 (or maybe 63), jump to 0 then back up to 62 (63) at the right most point. However, when I even ever so slightly move the stick left the number first jumps from 0 to 63, then even the slightest additional move left starts the number changing wildly, so fast it is a blur and it doesn't stop even if I let go of the stick. Bumping the stick slightly right stops it and the number goes back to zero or so. The interesting thing is that I don't see this happen in advj - there moving the stick to the left shows the value smoothly decreasing from 0 to -128. Moving the stick to the right results in the numbers increasing smoothly from zero up to +127 (never 128 that I've seen.) Moving up or down produces similar results, with up going to -128 and down going to +127. Lastly, this is after calibration via the up/down/left/right technique (the "Calibrate Joystick" menu item doesn't seem to do anything for me - nothing happens when I select it.)
