I'm having the exact same problem.  I figured it was due to my recent 
upgrade to LFS 6.0 which uses udev for dynamic device file generation.  I 
think my fb device isn't getting created when I load the svgalib module.  If 
I find the time, I might try and figure out what the actual cause is. 

As far as the modules.conf modification, it never worked in LFS (which I 
always figured was a boot script issue), so I just use the old school insmod 
command in a bootup script, which, of course, always works and is easy 
enough to do.
