Best video card for AdvanceMAME on Linux?

What is acknowledged as the best video card for AdvanceMAME under Linux
with VGA/SVGA output?

I trash-picked a computer with an nVidia TNT2 card and it works great. 
It's now running like a champ in my cocktail table.

But I'm helping a friend build one, and I have been through the following
video cards with no success (with either Linux framebuffer or svgalib):

- S3 Savage IX 8Mb
- nVidia GeForce FX 5600SE: the patch that allows rivafb recognize this
card results in sending a completely wrong frequency to the monitor.  Of
course, in X, it works fine.  The nvidiafb framebuffer driver doesn't
work.
- Intel 865G: won't support pixel clock lower than 25MHz, and causes
system hangups.

So, if I bought the ideal card, what would it be?
