Re: AdvanceCD alternative?

I am ignorant of AdvanceCD's charms, but here's how my cabinet launches
directly to AdvanceMENU:

1 - If not already done, change your /etc/inittab to init to runlevel 3,
not 5, so the X GUI does not launch on bootup

  id:3:initdefault:

2 - In /etc/inittab, add an --autologin parameter to the first mingetty line:

  1:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty --autologin gamer tty1

(replace "gamer" with the login name you use)

3 - Edit ~gamer/.bashrc to add a command to run advmenu:

  /usr/local/bin/advmenu

4 - Add a command to your advmenu setup that invokes "sudo shutdown -h
now" to shut the thing down cleanly.  Run "visudo," if not already, to
allow your user to sudo .

There may be other, more clever approaches, but this works for me!

BTW, I'm using Mandrakelinux 10.1 with a custom-built kernel that loads
rivafb, but the above steps should be pretty much universal across other
variants.)
