Which version of AdvanceMAME to use?

I have a general question regarding AdvanceMAME.  Unlike most users, I have a relatively basic setup that I am using.  A Pentium III - 866mhz machine with an integrated video card (Intel 82815), connected to a 17" BenQ LCD Monitor.
 
I also have Windows 2000 installed on my machine.  I would like to set things up so that the kids (and sometimes myself when I find the time) can play some basic games (like Ms. Pacman, Frogger, Donkey Kong, etc... nothing too fancy) without using Windows 2000 as I have work files on it that I would prefer to keep around!!
 
I had been using an older version of AdvanceCD which works fairly well.  Some of the games don't display properly, like Donkey Kong, for example.  So I thought that I would look at updating things a little, and see if it makes any difference.
 
My basic question is, I don't know if it's better to use AdvanceCD or the DOS version of AdvanceMAME?  I can setup a DOS boot CD so either method would allow easy access to boot and run without needing Windows 2000.  Otherwise, I don't know which one provides a better, truer picture, if any?
 
I know that the AdvanceCD which is based on the linux kernel auto-detects the hardware on startup -- while you need to configure the DOS version (I think?).  Because I have fairly basic hardware requirements, do I really need to bother configuring a DOS version of AdvanceMAME --  would I see any significant improvement?
 
I am obviously not obsessed with obtaining the *ultimate* gaming experience, otherwise I would be using better hardware -- but I would still like to get the best effort with the hardware I do have.  I don't mind doing some tinkering, if it's going to make any difference.
 
Finally, because I am just using a Standard PC Multi-Sync Monitor (LCD), does it still make sense to use AdvanceMAME over the normal version of MAME?  I know that AdvanceMAME is good for connecting different types of display devices, but if your just using a regular monitor, does it still make sense?
