I run a setup on my arcade monitor with pure framebuffer (matroxfb) on a Matrox G400. Console configured in a low-res mode (640x248) framebuffer, and AdvanceMame uses only framebuffer (with vsync). I have even gotten grubsplash (a user-space variant of bootsplash) working in 640x248 and displaying a nice progress-bar both with the monitor vertically and horizontally mounted. Works fine with matroxfb. If anyone is interested in some more details about configuring this, just let me know, and I will try to write it up.
