keyboard problems

I'm having problems with my ipac based usb keyboard controller.  It
works fine with advk and advmenu but none of the games in advmame 0.102
react to it.  The following excerpt from the log files appears to
indicate that mame does see it:

Games are are playable using the normal ps/2 keyboard.

One thing I do see is the the ipac appears twice (as event 2 and 3).  I
have no idea why it appears twice or if this is normal.  The OS is
Centos 4.2 with a Linux version 2.6.9-22.0.1.EL kernel.

Is there some configuration item I am missing to select a keyboard?
