howto kernel to change boot logo?

HI, 
I'd like to ask what are the procedures or steps to do a kernel recompile in advancecd?
I have read the  readme  but  I am  lost  on how  do  I  actually   recompile the kernel when my linux distribution is different from the advancecd. (I'm using ubuntu)
do i need to install linux w/ the same kernel version as advancecd and do a kernel recompile there?  please help me on this.
