Ok I found the solution after reading vfb.c & os.c in the sources, it
was quite obvious, I think I spent more time searching in google than
searching in the sources.

The problem is that advancemame look at the DISPLAY environment
variable in order to know if we are in X. The thing is that I always
have a DISPLAY=:0 in my .bashrc for some reasons.

So, altought I was not in X, advancemame thought I was.
Anyway, I think looking at the DISPLAY env is not the best way to
deduce if we are in X or not.

As I spent a lot of time googling about this, I'll put some keywords
in this post, maybe it will help some people searching for the same
problem ;-)

<keywords>
Unable to initialize the video driver. The errors are:
fb: Unsupported in X.
slang: Unsupported in X.
curses: Unsupported in X.

Ensure to use the 'device_video_output auto' option.
Try to run this program in console mode and not in X.
Try to run this program in a TERM=linux terminal.

Maybe this could be resolved making sure DISPLAY env is not set, just
try "unset DISPLAY" and see if it works
