Re: Super Mario Bros stymied (solved)

Other AdvanceMENU users,

In the process of getting the C64 emulator VICE running, I stumbled
across two crucial pieces of information which allowed me to finally get
AdvanceMESS (the Multiple Emulator Super System) running. One was the
description of the AdvanceMESS emulator in fine manual:

http://advancemame.sourceforge.net/doc-advmenu.html#4.3

and the other was about the C64 BIOS roms on this forum page:

http://www.bannister.org/forums/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Forum/7/topic/0=
02564/Number/0/site_id/1#import

My biggest problem was that I didn't understand how BIOS roms worked,
and that the error message "Emulator advmess without roms files,
ignoring it." meant *BIOS* roms and not *cartridge* roms. Now, I have
the BIOS roms for the C64, NES, and SNES correctly named and in the
right location and AdvanceMESS works (well, as well as the support of
the emulation for each system works). =

Thanks for y'all's help,
Anderson Mills

P.S. Just so y'all know, I'm sticking with FCE Ultra for NES emulation
and ZSNES for SNES emulation. They're support is more current and
better than AdvanceMESS's. I'm not sure about SDLMESS, but I've got
months' worth of games to play at this point. Yay!

Eric and others,

I sure did, and I put copies of the games in every directory I could
think of. Also, if I use advmess directly from the commandline, it
finds the roms without me having to specify a path to them, so it sure
seems that advmess.rc is set up correctly.

At this point, I've given up on advmess, and I'm running NES games using
FCE Ultra and SNES games through ZSNES. Unfortunately, I have to load X
for each of those, but at least I'm able to play the games (I have
advmenu run a shell script which loads X before running those emulators).

Also, just for knowledge, it turns out that the arcade game, "Vs. Super
Mario Bros," is pretty different from the NES game, "Super Mario
Bros." The arcade game is more difficult (Koopas (turtles) replace
some Goombas (mushrooms), less 1up's, etc), and uses different level
maps, especially later in the game.

Much appreciation,
Anderson Mills
