advanceCD not loading

Hey all. I'm new, and this is my first attempt at getting a MAME system up
and running.
I downloaded advanceCD from
http://advancemame.sourceforge.net/cd-download.html, and extracted it to a
folder on my C: drive. I then put my roms (about 50) into the
image\arcade\rom folder, ran checkrom (all roms were fine) and then used the
makeusb batch file to make a bootable USB stick.  the batch completed
successfully, but when i tried to boot off of the USB stick, it only got as
far as the advancemame loading screen- the white and blue one. there's a
blinking rectangular cursor on the right side of the screen, and mouse and
keyboard do nothing. I tried literally every key, one by one. I tried the
makecd utility, and the exact same thing happens.
Any help would be greatly apprectiated! thanks.
