Problem using Radeon X800XL

It says in the docs this card (in particular 554D, which this is according to
the adapter info in Windows) is supported, but when loading games, it tries
then goes back to Windows and says the infamous 'exit with status1'. I tried
recent and really old drivers and the same situation. Does anybody know what
might fix this?
