It's pretty broken in the way it doesn't easily allow for data filters at 
a low leve.  The best illustration of this is by looking at that last 
module I fiddled with for MCCP compression support:

I have vague memories of doing some hoops to get that to work nicely. 
Handling of multiple "filters" is very difficult with the existing system. 
The net module needs another re-write to allow this to be handled cleanly.

Beyond that really high-level "it's broken because...  uh, it's broken" 
description, I'll have to go revisit my investigation and messages that I 
hope I sent to the list.  It should be noted that I'm going off of a very 
old todo list.

I played with this a little a few months ago and it's actually not that 
trivial.  The way we handle modules doesn't seem to jive with py2exe.  I 
vaguely remember bumping into another freezing system, but I don't recall 
if I tried it out or not.

Anyhow, so this needs to be looked into some more.  The big advantage here 
is that if we could package Lyntin into a Windows exe (even a crippled 
version of Lyntin which can't load/unload user-installed modules), it's a 
huge help for people who want to run Lyntin from a USB drive.

It's something I'm interested in looking into even if it ends up being 
something we don't want to support in the "main" distribution but ends up 
being a fork or something.

A mapper would be a huge win, too.  Interestingly, I think building a 
mapper would be easier if I fixed the net.py module.  I have vague 
memories of Josh Berne having to work around the net.py implementation for 
his mapper.

The CVS to SVN conversion would be _hugely_ useful from an infrastructure 
standpoint.  It makes it a lot easier for people to do things in their own 
"sandboxes" and allows us to more easily move files around and things like 
that.  I switched PyBlosxom from CVS to SVN and it's so much easier to 
deal with now.
