It seems that different computer players are assigned different
strategies. Some will be very aggressive, putting most of their
resources into building fleets in the hope of knocking out some of
your important planets. They may even fly a big fleet to a planet they
have never visited before. They don't defend their home planets very
much or at all, so to beat this type of player, you may have to take
out their home planets, rather than attacking their fleets. If you get
attacked by a 7/4 fighter, it is probably coming from an aggressive
player that is putting most of its money into weapons research rather
than shields.

Some computer players are assigned to play very defensively. They
mostly satellites rather than attack fleets, and may only expand onto
one or two additional planets. They put their efforts into research,
rather than expansion, so while you are terraforming, they are
researching. If you attack one of their planets before you have an
overwhelming fleet, you will probably lose your investment of money
and metal. The only way to beat these players is to leave them alone
until you have enough profitable planets to out-research them. These
defensive players make it hard to win games fast. Several times I've
built powerful fleets of dreadnoughts and wiped out all opponents but
one or two, then I've lost the whole fleet in one volley at a
defensive player's planet. So I wait a few turns, build another huge
fleet, and loose the whole thing again before firing a single shot.
It's hard to be patient and wait long enough to beat one of these guys.

Other computer players play a more balanced game, with some aggression
and some defense.

If you have more than a few computer opponents, the different styles
work very well together. If you get too agressive, you may loose your
fleet to a defensive player. If you aren't agressive enough, an
aggressive player will sneak in and kill your planets. But when you
play against only a few opponents, you might end up with too many of
one kind.
