I have had some luck with the "go on the offensive" route ... build
everything up and go all out across the galaxy killing everything in
your way. Stop when you get to the other side (or wherever you are) and
hit a "good" planet. You'll need at least $500K in the bank as by now
your home is wiped out - but maybe you can build up a new home while the
opponent's searching for you, and maybe a couple others too. Don't
forget to switch your savings to 100% while travelling so you can live
off the interest when you settle somewhere. A few times I've actually
gone on to win this way .... :-) Good luck!

Oh, and I haven't tried this but ... try building defensive satellites
with max shields and minimum weapons/mini-tech .. they might hold off
the opponent while the DN hits 'em ... and it's surprising how cheap
some things are without the mini-tech factor.

Hmm, I always just play this on the Mac so I save often and try
different
things but I could see two possible options.

Put your DN on "offensive" for attack type (or whatever its called) and
build a colony ship to hit his planets. Hopefully you still are close
enough that you can wipe out an unprotected planet with the GN.

Alternately - build a fueler and go on a rampage to see how many planets
you
can take out. You still want to slowly build up colonies, but hopefully
you
can knock him down quickly.

Oh, and I guess lastly - if you have a lot of metal you could build some
fighters with the DN to improve your chances of winning battles when you
go
on the offensive.

Those may work ...
