You could be right; I can't really test it now as I don't 
have 3.4.x or 4.x any more.

The main purpose of that example was to draw attention to 
the fact that the existing ancestor filter excluded spouses 
while the descendant family filter included them; they 
weren't simply complementary to one another. It was a common 
misconception in the mailing list at the time.

The combination of A and B filters produced spouses of the 
core group, but not people related to them only by marriage. 
If you wanted them as well you could add the filter layer C.
