Strange option on command line

The wiki page and "gramps --help" show in usage display an option
"--load-modules=MODULE1, MODULE2,…".

I've looked through the source code but see this option handled nowhere.
What is it? What is it supposed to do?

Could it be an option intercepted by the Python interpreter to load
Python modules on start-up? I don't see the added-value of it due to the
dynamic loading in Python. In addition, Python could remove the option
before passing the rest to Gramps.

Is this a fossil from an early implementation?
