"ISO 3166-1 alpha-2" and "ISO 3166-1 alpha-3" codes (US GB and USA GBR) are very much in world-wide use. We have a Gramplet that gets location data from geonames, and I think that it does that for you, or at least the 2-letter codes. They will then be imported as alternate names. Does this help a bit?
