I create a place of the (custom) type Vessel. I don't add it to a hierarchy, per se. I enclose the vessel by a place with a specific date. Example; Jo Bloggs arrives in Calais, France on 24 May 1909, then the event would take place on 'Vessel'. I would enclose the vessel by Calais, but add the relevant date. Let's face it - ships move. They can't be enclosed by one place (well, not for long, anyway). They will only ever be enclosed by places on a specific date (or dates) and then move on. There is an exception to this rule; house boats. They can be enclosed by a place, since they rarely, if ever, move. I also create a place "At Sea" which I consider ideal for your purpose. The death event would then have the place as "Vessel", At Sea. I would expand further in a note; Died en route to Calais from Dover (or whatever). Theoretically, deaths at sea should be reported at the first port of call after the death event and records should exist there. Of course, in reality that may not have happened. The death could have been registered at final destination (say), or even (shock, horror), not at all. Take "S.S. Aquitania". She sailed between Southampton and New York.
