Me neither, at first, but Gramps does read a couple of such variables, 
maybe even more than a handful, and even if it does not in our own parts 
of the code, some routines that we call from Python do read them.

No. LC_TIME's just for date/time formatting. We have TZ for timezone, 
but I don't see any value for that variable on my system.

I run Dutch Mint 21.3 on a desktop with a US international keyboard, 
with € on 5, and LMDE 6 on a laptop with a UK keyboard, with a Pound 
sign, and on both, I can configure the keyboard to use dead keys, in 
which case I can press " before o to get ö, and Alt Gr and s to get ß, 
so if I want to write German, I can.

Are you saying that you have a genuine German QWERTZ keyboard?
