Exactly! And the main pros to choose ECW was that it is the only format
which MapServer can read directly. I thought maybe folks would like to
use those images for their web maps. Why not? While if compressing the
original scenes into ZIP or RAR, they still become quite large files.
Wavelet compression is something different and much more efficient. And
- most importantly - directly readable by GIS software without a need
to deploy uncompressed files on your disk in order to use them.

I have seriously tested MrSID, JPEG2000 and ECW formats while working
