It may indeed be ghostscript problem, but I think I may need some 
guidance. I use cygwin64, which comes with ghostscript (gs is in the 
search path for window and cygwin), but even if I make these same two 
commands in a windows cmd window, it still hangs.
Yes, I have installed the gmt binaries using the installers at
http://gmt.soest.hawaii.edu/gmt4/gmt/gmt_windows_SOEST.html
Note that psbasemap and psxy, and the other gmt commands seem to work 
fine. Just ps2raster is having the issues.

Do the gmt windows binaries require a separate installation of 
ghostscript for windows? I thought the windows install had everything 
built in.
