How do I adapt a color pallet to my data

Hi,

I have a color pallet (downloaded from the internet) which I like, in which
the colors are associated with a range of values.
How do I:

(1) Use the cpt for different datasets, but have the colors always
correspond to the same value, no matter which dataset I am displaying.

(2) Use the cpt for the different datasets, and always see the entire range
of colors in the cpt, no matter which dataset I am displaying. i..e, in
this case the colorbar will be the same, but the values will be different.

When I use makecpt, with the range of my data, it doesn't give me the whole
range of colors available in the master cpt file.

Is there an online tutorial for using cpt's in GMT?
