Well, that is certainly 100% expected behavior.  Longitudes are periodic =
coordinates whereas a Cartesian projection assumes linear coordinates.
If you want to tell GMT that your data are in fact periodic but still =
want to plot using a non-geographic scaling then you need to add "d" to =
your x-scale, i.e. -JX17cd/8.5c.
