Hi Tabel,

The "backup version" is the fallback mode. Using the fallback mode is
just a temporary solution meanwhile the keyboard navigation is improved
in gnome-shell. Gnome-shell is keyboard navigable, but it needs several
improvements for a good user experience.

You can Force the Fallback mode : Open gnome-control-center > the System
Info icon > Graphics > Change Forced Fallback Mode to ON.

You can alternatively choose the type of session from a terminal with a
gsettings command: 

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.session session-name 'gnome-fallback'
