Source of Gkrellm network statistics

Hi,

I just discovered that clicking on the Gkrellm panel for my network device
(eth0) brings up a new window containing traffic statistics for
the last 12 months.  I would like to know where gkrellm gets this data.

The data must be stored on disk, because the values persist across reboots.

I have tried looking in /proc, /var/log and /var/run.  I also 
tried looking at the program source code, but still failed to
locate the source of the statistics.

I run Gkrellm under Gentoo Linux, with kernel 2.6.18.
