Some more things to try:
Will an alternate config run:
    gkrellm -c foo

If it does, then get debug screen positioning output:
    gkrellm -d 0x6000

And attach to the running gkrellm and get a stacktrace:

   $ gdb gkrellm pid-of-gkrellm
at the gdb prompt:
    (gdb) bt
    ... stack trace is dumped
    (gdb) quit
