I attached logs of a successful start and a segfault during start, but I had those before my present prblems. The present prblem looks like the problem I had with Xfce itself, it needed over 10 minutes to start up. I assume the reason was a faulty entry in /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers that got fixed after a package upgrade (to an unstable marked version). But I don't know if something similar could affect gkrellm, or how.
