it appears the weather images i was getting got changed and sent data that 
caused wget to hang until a key was pressed. i got around the whole url mess 
by using a cron script to download images i found on a local news weather 
site that give what i look for, and then using the image keyword instead of 
url and it is now working fine. 

the no-display-at-all problem appeared to be caused by a damaged library. i 
rebuilt the library and recompiled the programs using it and suddenly 
everything began working except the url keyword which was caused by the kind 
of data the url returned. how it got damaged is a mystery. since the system 
is on a ups power blinks/outages are not a concern.

panicked yesterday as these are extremely important this time of year with all 
the tropicals around. i am in eastern florida a few miles from the coast so 
you can see how important these are in keeping up on things.
