Specifying disks to monitor in Linux

On Linux, the names of the disk devices can change from boot to boot.  For
example, if you have two disk controllers, and you have a SATA cable from
the first controller running to an external plug.

In this case the names of the disks on the second controller will change,
depending on whether or not there is a drive plugged into the external
plug on booting.

There are a number of legitimate and unavoidable reasons why the names of
drives can change.  I could list them off, but you get the point.

In the /etc/fstab file, this problem is solved by referring to the drives
using their UUIDs instead of the hardware name.

Is it possible to have similar functionality in gkrellm?  I don't like to
keep going in and changing its configuration every time I reboot.

gkrellm is a VERY slick program.  I am very impressed all around.  This
issue sticks out like a big paint splotch on the Mona Lisa.

I tell you what: if gkrellm could listen on dbus and automagically start
monitoring my USB drives (and Ethernet devices!) when I plug them in, that
would be fantastic.
