Then does user gkrellmd have permission to open the X server display?
I put up a new tarball that now looks at stderr from the nvidia-settings command
so if it is a permission problem, we should get some indication now:

So, either run gkrellmd as your desktop user and see what you get or
try the new tarball and run "gkrellmd -d 0x80" as before.
