I'll try the beta - if posted means to this list, I assume I can find  
it in the archives.  If not, I'd appreciate a link.

I love the part that says Windows will let me know if it found a  
solution.

I just noticed that cygwin has an ESD.  I don't know if that would make  
it any easier, if you use mingw.  I do assume going directly to the  
Windows sound system would essentially be a complete rewrite.

I wish I had the time and skill to actually do something useful with it
