slackware - flashing screen on terminal

Hello all.

I've been having an issue with gkrellmd.

I am running slackware64-current, with the Nvidia video card modules
installed.
System Specs:
MSI X99a-Raider
Intel i7-5820K
Nvidia GTX 960 (x2)
16GB RAM
various SSD and HD's
Slackware64-current

Every time I start gkrellmd my terminal screen will flash about once a
second, until I kill the process.
If I start X11 the screen stops flashing, but will continue when I drop
back to text mode.

slackware64-current is shipping with gkrellm-2.3.7.
I have tried building 2.3.9 and 2.3.10 and the current git version and
*all* have this same behavior on my system.

If I clear out the Nvidia modules and then run gkrellmd, the screen
flashing does not happen.

I've tried different Nvidia modules as well:
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-375.39
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-375.66
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-378.13 <--- currently loaded

I cannot find anything in my logs that seem related.

The only "correlation" I can seem to find is when I am watching "top" and
every time the screen flashes, gkrellmd seems to use a bit more CPU than
normal (jumps from 0.3% up to 1 or 1.5%) and "nvidia-smi" then uses up to
60% CPU and then stops, and this pattern seems to repeat every time I get a
screen flash.

Any clues or hints on how to stop this? I do use my text console, quite a
bit actually, so it's a bit annoying to have it flashing once a second.
Sure I could just use X all the time, but something seems really wrong with
this behavior.
If I boot to windows on this same system and run gkrellmd there, I have no
issues that I can tell.

I have another system, also slackware64-current, but no Nvidia drivers and
it's an AMD CPU and it does not exhibit this behavior at all.
