That's the bit that counts in terms of getting the transactions right.

The unrealised gain is in the investment value on the BS, the realised 
gain is in a bank a/c or similar, the amount that balances it all up is 
in equity.  Try running a multi-column balance sheet so you can see a 
before and after side by side, it may help to clear things up.
