for CR2 files (the new digital cameras) it is Makernote. Not all the
tags are known but the most useful are. the older cameras used a
proprietary format that is almost all understood (I used to own one
and I have thousands of CRW files that I would like to be able to
browse using gqview). I currently have a canon 20d that generates both
JPEGs and CR2 at the same time.

Makernote parsing is not difficult (at least for those tags that are
known). I have a bit of experience with the makernote tags in Canon.

I have some code in C and C++ to do it, and to extract metadata from
CRWs. The main problem I think is to define a good
interface/architecture so that the myriad of different tags and values
can be returned properly to gqview.

There are some programs that have support for a large number of
cameras (for example exiftool, written in Perl)
