I don't know about NEFs, but I have code to do that with CR2s and CRWs. Look at the source code of gqview. It probably returns and offset to the JPEG header. It is a matter of scanning this data to see where it ends. It should be easy to do it. I will let other decide if it is a desirable feature. In my opinion, this is beyond what gqview is about.
