Perhaps you already know, but a convenient tool for doing that outside
of gqview is exiftool:

  http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/

You can do:

  exiftool -b -JpgFromRaw foo.nef >foo.jpg

The embedded JPEG does not have its own EXIF header.  If you want to
copy the NEF's EXIF to the extracted JPG, exiftool can do that too.
