Understood.  I can see this with an arbitrary list of files; makes
sense.  The thing is when we're handling directories, I would have
thought it would be possible to update the file list widget's base
directory parameter at the moment of transition to the next directory.

In pseudo-code terms:

if( no_more_entries_in_current_directory )
{
	nextOne = getNextDirectoryFromCLIList
	FileList_SetBrowseDirectory( nextOne )
	show_directory( nextOne )
}

I do appreciate I may be unusual in seeing "Directories of Image Files"
as the fundamental component; an arbitrary list may in fact be much more
common.  That said it's a theme I find across almost all my usage of
images, whatever their nature, be they my own photos, collected ones,
etc.  Maybe I'm just way more obsessive about putting everything into an
appropriate directory than most people are.....

Sure - understandable limitation of the file browser widget.

In a naturally-sorted file system, it should be possible to guess which
directory you're currently in from what the current image is.

Nope, quite clear.  I might well try and take a look at this one myself
- see if I can figure out a way to make it work.
