GThumb and GQView

Hi developers of GThumb and GQView!

First thanks for your effort and time spend developing these two
wonderful applications. I enjoy to use both and want to share with you
some experiences with both - I believe both are 98% there. And the
other 2% could be copied from each other. I want to encourage working
together and making this a better world (of linux).

- Animation-gif only work in GThumb

- The sorter (sort manager) in GQ is excellent. I have to sort
soooo many photos and this is the only way how I can do it fast (btw: I
cannot sort multiple images, which is ashame). Excellent feature: undo.
Feature request: Please put the "deleted" images on the undo stacks
(it's only a move to Trash - so very easy to implement) - THANKS

- I have a situation, where I browse 25 images, and the parent
directory has 8000 entries. GThumb shows the 25 images after 1 second,
GQ after about 2 min (below my PC config) - unfortunately unusable in
this situation

- GQ preloads the next image - this makes browsing images this
SOOOO much faster. THANKS. Feature request: Can I configure to preload
<n> next images?

- GThumb can effictiently rotate all my photos (from my cam) that
are rotated by 90 degrees (select them, rotate all) - excellent
feature!! I trust this does effect JPEG quality. BTW: my GQ cannot
rotate at all, not sure, if the external program is OK

- Movie (and other files) are only displayed in GQ - the "filter"
feature is excellent. Unfortunately there are bugs in the display.
GThumb shows nothing (not even a note saying "there are 25 non-image
files here"). I really need a browser that can display the first frame
of the movie. I know you will say "no, I'm not a movie displayer, but a
picture displayer". Windoof can do it, so we can do it 10 times better!
I understand that is easy with "mplayer" [to extract the first frame as
JPEG]. I'd be happy to support you both in this feature to find out the
details on how to manage this. How about a plug-in method to create
previews? Then even HTML pages could be "previewed"? Similar to other
evil operating systems from Redmond

- icon preload all versus on demand: either will do for me; but I'd
appreciate if GThumb could pre-fetch the next page, so that if I scroll
down, I have the icons there. .xvpics support (I believe you both have
that) is excellent - I still have lots of burned CDs with .xvpics - xv
was my previous favorite picture viewer!

- GQ: that the keys have different meanings in different
sub-windows is KILLING me. Could there be a setting, where all the keys
work the same in all windows? THANKS

- GQ: deduplicator for images: genious and great. I just need one
more button: AUTO (delete one of the duplicates, doesn't matter,
which). You use MD5 I believe and that is a safe method

- GThumb: if I use my personal deduplication script (MD5 checksums
on all files with same length; including offline index from burnt DVDs)
then some of the icons will be deleted, but some don't. Just try to
delete a few files (with "rm" from a shell) and you see what I mean).

- GThumb: if I delete many images pressing DEL repeatedly, I will
get an error message like "the file does not exist" - obviously from
too quickly pressing the button - but that has to safely work. I need
to sort and delete a lot of files. And I need to do it QUICK. Would be
nice, if you could look into that.

- Directory browser: I like the tree in GQ, so I don't need to say
"previous (..)" <wait><wait> and then click on the next
directory

- GQ: cannot delete a whole directory (right mouse button on
directory in tree)

Thanks so much for reading this all. You see that I have little
problems with both programs and need to change forward and backward
between them. I (and the world) would much enjoy, if we had one, that
does it all.

As I said: I recommend to work together here. And make the very best
image/mulitmedia browser ever. Get the missing 'xv' features in as
well. And the movie stuff. I'd be honored to help in this regard.

Here quickly my PC spec (to clarify, that if I say SLOW, that I mean
it): dual K7-2000+, 1GB RAM, RAID-0 SATA array with 0.6TB, dual-LCD
2560x1024x24. Yes, a nice PC, thanks. I use GQ2.1.1 and GThumb 2.6.5.
