The main window file list can only display the contents of a single 
directory at a time - no more, no less.

I have been planning to make the thumbnails in the collection window only 
load on demand (when visible), but have yet to implement it.

I am confused as to what you are referring to with 'image window' and 'file 
window'.

If I decipher the two correctly, my explanation is that the main window 
(window you see upon starting GQview) is always referencing a 'physical' 
file or list of files - deleting them there will delete the file(s) from 
disk too. But collections, search results, and find duplicate results (all 
3 have their own unique window) are user created lists, the 'Delete' key 
will only modify the the list you 'created'.

On the other hand, [Control]+[D] will _always_ initiate the delete file 
function. If you can not be bothered by the distinction, under advanced 
preferences turn off the 'enable delete key' option. The Delete key will 
then not be able to delete a file from disk, and only [Control]+[D] will work.

In the default configuration (delete confirmation is on), the only danger 
with not knowing the delete key behavior in auxiliary windows is that files 
are not removed from disk.
