RAW images look great in GQView, how does it do it?

I have a Nikon camera that I was convinced to set to write RAW image
files. GQview can open and view these raw files and they look great.

When I use a program like ufraw-batch to convert them to jpeg they
look horrible! Very dark and useless. I have tried to tweak ufraw to
produce similar results to gqview but it is very time consuming and it
is not something I want to waste time doing. And it never looks as
good as gqview anyway!

How does gqview make the nef files look so good when ufraw makes them
look so bad? How do I duplicate what gqview is doing and create jpg
files?
