I use ee for this. You can scale, rotate, change contrast, crop etc etc. ee is short for Electric Eyes and seems to be a standard part of gnome. I have it in my editors config' panel (ee %f) and can right click on an image and chose edit with ee, crop rotate etc and then save/ quit and I'm back to gqview.
