Great, that works for me and I agree it's more intuitive.

Again, great, I've been dying for this.

I know little about image decoding and I know nothing about gqview/gdk-pixbuf 
code but here's my uninformed comment anyways :)

I'm guessing the thumbnailing code is the same code that would be used to load 
an image. Maybe what gdk-pixbuf needs is a specific function for loading 
thumbnails where it can take some shortcuts since it only needs to decode a 
certain percentage of the image and it can probably be much more reckless 
with image quality.
