Are any warnings printed on the console when this happens? (start gqview from a terminal window, if necessary) Also, when the image becomes a black display, does the title bar display the filename that should be displayed? And what happens when you right click the black display (normally where the image is displayed) and select properties? (or can you even select the image properties in this condition?).
