Oh wow, actually, you are right, I'm sorry about that. It seems that I've 
got so used to this behavior over the decades, that it didn't even occur 
to me that anything is wrong there, whereas your textual description 
definitively didn't sound right :-)

I guess it could work, if you come up with a patch we might be able to 
have a look at it.
