I need to defend PMI if you have the idea that they're
simply in the business of selling certifications. 
They are a professional organizaion like any other -
their primary role is to develop standards and add
structure to the mass of research and heuristic
knowledge that is out there.

In general, though, I agree with you.  Information on
Project Management practices for the beginner on the
web are scarce.  PMI is an excellent resource for the
professional, but its not necessarily the best place
to begin. 

I've been thinking of writing the sort of guide that
you speak of, and these recent few messages have
confirmed the need for it.  Planning and development
of this guide will take some time, though, as its a
far more involved undertaking than the MrProject user
guide.

In the meantime, I think your best bet is a trip to
the bookstore.  When I did a search, on Amazon.com, I
found "Complete Idiot's Guide to Project Management
with Microsoft Project 2000" by Ron Black.  I haven't
read it, but from the sample pages, it looks fairly
good (although since M$P 2000 is a more mature
product, it may increase the number of things on your
wish list for MrProject).
